The Sound of Music

Music is the one art we all have inside. We may not be able to play an instrument, but we can sing along or clap or tap our feet.
— Mr. Rogers

A few years ago, I was working at a retreat in Hawaii, and had the sense after giving a treatment one night, that we needed to go to a specific bay, the next afternoon. There was a strong premonition that dolphins would surface in that proximity. After inviting a few people, with the astrisked promise that these beautiful mammals may be in attendance, I began to question my sanity!!

However, next morning, we head to the cove, and begin walking to the beach... And true to form, we see the dolphins. More than one could count. Grabbing the paddleboards, and running into the ocean, the glorious experience began.

As I’m galloping into the water the STRANGEST thing began to happen. I start singing. I mean LOUD singing. NOW, I had no conscious awareness of doing this, only after someone asked WHAT I was singing did I realize I was!!! It was on repeat. The song did not stop for 40 minutes, and that is saying something, because at one point I had my head under water with a snorkel. I also NEVER EVER sing in public!! A force took over that I had no memory of or control over!

The dolphins were surrounding our paddleboards, jumping, doing flips, and singing their own songs. One of the women that had been diving down, noticed a distressed baby and mother dolphin. The mother dolphin had wire wrapped around its dorsal fin and was bleeding profusely. After many attempts, the woman diver freed her from the wire.

For about ½ hour after this event, the dolphins continued to sing, and play around our boards, then as if on cue the whole pod swam and dove their way back to the open ocean.

I was in shock. What stood out to me was how intuitive the communication was with another species. That we were a part of a cycle, the cycle of life. That singing was involved on both sides.

MUSIC/SINGING/RHYTHM/FREQUENCIES connected us, and perhaps assisted in the healing, the joy and the connection.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote:
“Music is the universal language of mankind.”

Scientists at Harvard have researched and confirmed this truth.

But here is a question I have been pondering:
What if “universal” includes everything in Nature, the Cosmos, and Internally, and they all speak a language that at times may not even be heard or understood? The language of music, rhythm, vibration, frequency. What if music is used to transcend, heal, and connect people to all things within this universe?

Male Humpback Whales sing, with their head down and their tales up. These songs can last between 5 -30 minutes and be heard hundreds of miles away. Different species have distinct songs, but they ALL sing the SAME song with minor variations. A University of Queensland-led study has found humpback whales can learn incredibly complex songs from whales from other regions. Scientists study their songs to understand their meaning, as no one understands WHY whales sing.

In other areas of nature, research is ongoing about Plants (with the assistance of sensors) being able to translate vibrational frequencies into music.

Astrophysicist and musician Matt Russo translates data from space into music at the University of Toronto…Planets or moons sometimes fall into what's called "orbital resonance," where two or more bodies pull each other into a regular rhythm.

"The rhythm is very similar to what a drummer might play. There's a very simple regularity," Russo said.

My mind begins to question…
What if by singing, listening, or playing music – each of us (plants, bees, whales, humans and planets) are pulling one another into a regular rhythm – a recalibrating of oneness and support?

Wouldn’t it be curious if Music was the unspoken language that bonded us together, and was secretly dressed up as CREATIVITY, PLAY, and FUN...

May you be inspired to sing, play or listen to music in a new way, with heightened

curiosity this month!!
